Unable to afford wedding expense, these poor generally take loan from informal money lenders/ sahukar because formal lending sector doesn’t grant loan for such purposes. The interest rate charged be money lenders are as high as 60% per year. This result in debt trap for bride families. Ultimately they have to sell their belongings to repay loan.
Gramin Jan Kalyan Sansthan tried to help bride families by donating wedding necessities to the bride and their families, so that they couldn’t fall in debt trap. GJKS is also helping in solemnizing marriage without dowry. Although illegal in India, it is still prevalent in rural India
